Introduction

Wellington City Council is the local government authority, which is made up of the Mayor and 14 councillors. Council has two fundamental responsibilities, firstly promoting the well-being of Wellington and its people by focusing on the themes of prosperity, social cohesion and safety; secondly facilitating democratic local decision-making to create an environment where talented people want to live and a dynamic central eco-city. Council provides a range of services from infrastructure maintenance to dog licensing and servicing the Zoo to providing recreational centres and sports field. Ultimately Council is working towards its 2040 long-term plan as a ‘Smart Capital’ incorporating quadruple bottom line (economical, environmental, financial and cultural) to maximise prosperity, diversity and wealth.
